For players like Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Jon Lester, Friday was a reminder of what once was in Boston. A city gripped by postseason fever. An electricity palpable across the region.
For others, like Will Middlebrooks, it was something new.
"[Winning the division] means the world," said Middlebrooks. "This group of guys is my family."
Sporting a "We own the East" t-shirt, Middlebrooks explains what it was like to be sent down to Pawtucket and then find his way back to Boston to celebrate a division title.
"It just makes it that much sweeter. These guys have stuck with me."
No one gave the Sox much of a chance in spring training, but now that they've defied the odds, how high might their ceiling be?
"Ceiling?" asked Middlebrooks with a raised eyebrow. "What's that? I don't think we have one. If anyone's going to beat us, it's going to be ourselves."
