The Cardinals defense fell apart in Game 1 of the World Series and the Red Sox were more than happy to take advantage in their 8-1 victory on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

"Complete ineptitude and meltdown by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first two innings," is how Tony Massarotti described it on the "Playoff Central" postgame show. "That was laughable.

Lou Merloni had said he thought the Red Sox had a defensive advantage coming into this series, but he said he never expected this.

"I thought it would be in range [where the Cardinals were lacking], but not errors," Merloni said.

St. Louis made three errors and five of the Red Sox eight runs were unearned.

"These weren't errors," Massarotti said. "This was ineptitude."
