BOSTON -- Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo may be drawing some interest from the Chicago Cubs, who are in search of a manager. The Cubs have already spoken with Tampa Bay coach Dave Martinez and San Diego coach Ron Renteria, and may have Lovullo on their short list, too.

"To me, he's a manager in waiting,'' said Sox manager John Farrell. "I think he's going to have opportunities until he ends up securing one of the jobs. He's been integral to the success we've had here, he's a great baseball mind. The conversations and the feedback and the insights that he gives . . . he's going to be very good.''

Farrell said the Cubs have yet to contact the Sox to ask permission to speak with Lovullo. Some reports have the Cubs wanting to have a manager in place by the end of the World Series. Farrell was asked what the Sox' stance would be if they asked to speak to Lovullo before the World Series began.

"I think we'd like to have everybody to remain focused on what we have here, first,'' Farrell said. "We don't want to get in the way of potential opportunities for someone, either. Hopefully, if those requests come in, they would be sensitive to what we're going through, as well.''
