BOSTON -- Mike Napoli? Jonny Gomes? David Ross?
Make way for Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr and Dom DiMaggio.
Fans arriving at Fenway Park for Game 1 of the World Series were surprised -- and delighted -- to see the Red Sox legends join in the bearded phenomenon.
The players depicted in the three statues outside Gate B behind right field -- Williams with a young child, Yastrzemski waving to the crowd, and the four teammates (Williams, Pesky, Doerr and DiMaggio) -- all were adorned with large red beards, an homage to their hirsute 2013 successors. Their way, you might say, of expressing their solidarity with the current Sox as they prepare to face the Cardinals . . . fitting, since all of them lost a World Series to the Cards (Yaz in 1967, the others in 1946).
