The development of the Cardinals young pitching staff is one of the biggest reasons St. Louis has reached the World Series, which begins Wednesday night with Game 1 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

The poise and performance of pitchers such as Game 2 starter and NLCS MVP Michael Wacha has surprised even veteran Cardinals.

Here's a sampling of their comments from media day on Tuesday at Fenway:

Left fielder Matt Holiday: "For us to have this many young pitchers to show the poise they have in the situations they've been put in is pretty incredible."

Catcher Yadier Molina: "The minor league system and the organization has done a good job teaching the right way to go about it. They've been amazing."

Injured pitcher Chris Carpenter: "Their confidence level, maturity, poise and way they go out and compete and don't let the situation faze them has been fantastic. It's been unexpected and a lot of fun to watch."
