The Red Sox have received strong starting pitching on their current road trip, and their rotation could soon get another boost.
Clay Buchholz is scheduled to make a rehab start on Sunday for the Single-A Lowell Spinners, and that means he's on the final step before a return to the majors.
CSNNE.com Red Sox Insider Sean McAdam says Buchholz will likely throw 40-50 pitches or about three innings.
Buchholz will make a second rehab start on Friday, but it has not yet been determined where that outing will be.
It's been two and a half months since Buchholz has pitched for the Sox. His return would give the Sox a top-of-the-rotation starter for the final month of the season.
Buchholz's second rehab start will likely be with either Triple A Pawtucket or Double A Portland. Both are playoff teams in their respective leagues, but Sox manager John Farrell said he hoped Buchholz could help a playoff team down the stretch -- preferably his team.
