BOSTON -- Read into this what you will:

The Tigers have decided to sacrifice defense for offense at the shortstop position in Game 2, as they're benching Jose Iglesias -- 2-for-15 (.133) in the postseason so far -- for Jhonny Peralta. Don Kelly will play left field, Peralta's position in Game 1.

Detroit also went with Peralta over Iglesias at short in the winner-take-all Game 5 of the ALDS against Oakland, and, with runs at a premium in the first game of the ALCS, opted for the extra bat. The fact that the Sox were so impotent offensively Saturday night -- and with ace Max Scherzer on the mound -- may have led Tigers manager Jim Leyland to feel that the defensive downgrade won't hurt as badly as it might.

As for the Sox, the changes that were reported Saturday night -- Mike Carp in for Mike Napoli at first base, Jonny Gomes in for Daniel Nava at left field -- have come to pass.
