For the second time in three spot starts this season, Tim Wakefield allowed just one run. Unlike last time, Sunday night he got credit for the win.
Wakefield pitched six scoreless innings before allowing a run in the seventh as the Red Sox beat the Chicago, 5-1.
It was Boston's eighth win in its last nine games and moved the Red Sox to within a half-game of first place in the American League East.
Wakefield picked up his first win of the season, allowing four hits. He was remarklably efficient, facing one hitter over the minimum through the first five innings and needing just 75 pitches over 6 23 innings.
The Sox got sacrfice flies from Jed Lowrie and Mike Cameron in the fourth, a solo homer from Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the fifth and a two-run triple from Kevin Youkilis to account for their runs.
The triple extended Youkilis's hitting streak to 10 games.
