Abby Chin has the headlines and highlights for Saturday, August 9th, including the Patriots 31-22 win over the Eagles.
* After an offseason in which the Patriots made headlines for all the wrong reasons, the team was grateful to be back on the field Friday. The Patriots took on the Eagles in their first preseason game, and wasted no time in showing off their potent... rushing attack?
The Pats marched down the field on six straight running plays, including a 62-yard Stevan Ridley run on the first play from scrimmage. Ridley capped the drive with a 1-yard TD.
On the second drive, Tom Brady hit Shane Vereen on the left side for a touchdown.
After two series, Brady sat and Ryan Mallett took over. But his appearance was short-lived as Mallet left with a head injury and left only one option for Bill Belichick.
Tebow was his usual erratic self, but did lead a scoring drive and picked up some pick first downs.
The Patriots went on to win, 31-22.
* Jake Peavy was back on the mound for the Red Sox, and this time the result was far less impressive.
Peavy lasted only five innings, allowing six earned runs in a 9-6 loss to the Royals.
* Once the most dominant pitcher in the steroid era, Pedro Martinez revealed Friday that he was offered steroids while in the minor leagues with the Dodgers.
Martinez said he turned down the offer.
