Patriots ready for a Sandy stay in London

Some quick notes prior to Sunday's Patriots-Rams matchup in London:

In the Sunday Times preview of the game (on Page 10, incidentally), Bill Belichick was referred to as the "grumpy genius" and it was noted there's concern about the Pats' "rearguard".

The Patriots may be stranded in England by Hurricane Sandy for a day or two. They're unable to fly out tonight because Heathrow Airport closes at 11 p.m. London time, less than three hours after the game figures to end. If flights to Boston are cancelled on Monday because of the storm, the Pats would have to wait until Tuesday to fly home. Fortunately, their bye week starts Monday so a layover won't affect game preparation.

Bruins select BU's Charlie McAvoy with 14th pick in 2016 NHL Draft

The Boston Bruins selected a local kid, Boston University's Charlie McAvoy with 14th pick in 2016 NHL Draft.

*The speedy Charlie McAvoy, who was arguably BU’s best defenseman last season as the youngest player in college hockey: “The thing that impressed me the most is how he handled the physical aspect of college hockey. He was the youngest kid in college hockey and played half the season as a 17-year-old going up against 22, 23 and 24-year old kids. A lot of kids come into college hockey and have good seasons statistically, but can get physically overwhelmed at that level. That didn’t happen with Charlie at all. A lot of times he’d go in one-on-one with guys six or seven years older than him, and he’d win the battle. That says an awful lot about him as a player. You add that to his skating ability, his vision and his hockey sense, and he’s put himself in position to be a top-10 draft pick.”

The NBA will have more of a Northeastern flavor this season.

The Huskies' star guard David Walker is joining the Miami Heat for the NBA's summer league in Orlando and Las Vegas, according to Sports Illustrated's Jake Fischer.

Walker averaged 17.9 points and 4.0 assists per game as a senior at Northeastern.

Quincy Ford is heading to the Utah Jazz with a partially guaranteed three-year contract after averaging 16.4 points, 7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game as a senior. That deal was first reported by The Vertical's Shams Charania.
