Patriots post-cut diligence continues

By Tom E. CurranWith well over 600 players being released on Friday, the Patriots pro personnel department has its work cut out for it in updating its evaluations. On Tuesday, the team worked out the following players: QB Mike Kafka (Northwestern), RB Lex Hilliard (Montana), LB Jerrell Harris (Alabama), DB Eric Frampton (Washington State), DB Devin Holland (McNeese State), DB Dante Hughes (California), WR Jaymar Johnson (Jackson State), WR Tysson Poots (S. Utah) , DB Chyl Quarles (Wake Forest)and LB Jason Williams (Illinois).Kafka's name was an eye-catcher because hewas a fourth-round pick bythe Eagles in 2010 and the Patriots released Brian Hoyer. He broke his left hand during preseason and was replaced and overtaken by by Nick Foles and Trent Edwards respectively. The chance exists the Patriots would like to sign him and put him on their 53.You can check off all the requisite boxes next to his name for being a Patriots' fit: smart, excellent leader, tough, hard-worker, accurate.More likely, though, the team wants an updated evaluation on Kafka in case the quarterback they selected in the third round last year - Ryan Mallett - doesn't work out. Kafka is not eligible to be placed on practice squad.
