There will be no Triple Crown in 2012.
After winning the first two legs of the elusive title, I'll Have Another was scratched from Saturday's Belmont Stakes due to an injury to his left front tendon, and will now be retired.
For a horse that stood on the edge of history, the late scratch is likely to overshadow Saturday's race.
"Far from tragic but it is very disappointing," said trainer Doug O'Neill.
Reporting from the racetrack, Bob Neumeier described the atmosphere as, "like taking a pin and poking it through a balloon."
Once again, the prospect of a Triple Crown winner, the first since Affirmed in 1978, brought interest to the struggling sport. 100,000 fans were expected to attend the race.
I'll Have Another now joins 11 other horses since Affirmed who have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but have been unable to win the Belmont Stakes.
I'll have another will still lead the parade
