Andy Hart from Patriots Football Weekly joins Arbella Early Edition to discuss who impressed him most in the Patriots first preseason game of the year.
Jimmy Garoppolo is the obvious answer after completing 9-of-13 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, all while stealing the spotlight from what should have been the Ryan Mallett show.
But aside from Garoppolo, Hart says Brian Tyms deserves some love.
"He has shown up and he seems to have something going on with Garoppolo," says Hart. "They just seem to have a connection.
"He might be a guy you stick around the practice squad and have in the wings in case an injury pops up."
On the defensive side, Hart liked Malcolm Butler, the rookie CB out of West Alabama.
Hart describes Butler as "feisty".
"He’s going to get beat, but [he's] another guy [like Tyms] who doesn’t seem to be phased by the spot, even though he’s making a big jump in competition."
Neither player is a lock, or even likely, to win a roster spot out of camp, but Hart thinks a shakeup could be possible. Specifically, Hart notes that veteran special teamers eventually become too expensive and could be replaced by younger, more affordable players. That's not to say guys like Matthew Slater will lose their roster spot, but if there's anyone willing to make a surprising move, it's Bill Belichick.
"We know Bill doesn’t care where you came from," says Hart. "If he decides you’re pretty good in August and you can help me, then you’re going to be on the team."
