BOSTON — The Boston Athletic Association is investigating cases of bib fraud in which runners took part in Monday’s race wearing other peoples’ numbers.

Several runners have said on social media they logged onto the race’s official photo site and saw others wearing their bibs. Entrants, who pay $175 or more to get the bib, label the unofficial runners known as “bandits” as cheaters or thieves.

Race organizers say bandits can stretch resources and pose a security threat. After tolerating banditry for years, the B.A.A. tried to discourage it this year because of the large size of the official field and the security concerns after last year’s bombings.
