ARLINGTON, Texas -- Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell has been offered the job and needs only to come to agreement on a contract to become the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, multiple industry sources said.

Third-base coach DeMarlo Hale was told Friday afternoon that he was no longer under consideration for the position. He and Farrell had been finalists to replace Cito Gaston, who is retiring after a second stint as Blue Jays manager.

Farrell couldn't be reached for comment and Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos declined to comment. But several sources confirmed that Farrell was the Jays' choice.

The likely loss of Farrell leaves the Red Sox with a sizeable hole on their coaching staff. Beyond Mike Cather, who serves as one of the club's two advance scouts in 2010 but previously had worked as the organization's Double A pitching coach, there appear to be no obvious candidates within the organization.

This would mark the second straight season that the Sox have lost a key member of their coaching staff to a major league managerial opening. Former bench coach Brad Mills left last off-season to become manager of the Houston Astros.

Farrell has been with the Red Sox since the 2007 season, when he left his post as director of player development with the Cleveland Indians to join Terry Franacon's staff.

By some estimates, the Blue Jays talked to more than 20 candidates for their opening. Among the candidates in the first round was Red Sox third base coach Tim Bogar.
