BOSTON -- There wasn't much left for the Red Sox to accomplish on their final weekend except playing the role of spoiler. As it turned out, they did that very well.
In the last game of the regular season, the Red Sox won their second straight from the New York Yankees, 8-4, and prevented their arch-rivals from winning the American League East title.

The Yanks went into the final day tied for first with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays beat Kansas City later in the day, a result which would have made them A.L. East champs even if the Yankees had won in Boston. New York will be the A.L. wild-card team.
John Lackey pitched one of his better games of the season, limiting the Yanks to three runs -- one of which was unearned -- through 7 23 innings, finishing the year at 14-11.
The Sox got a two-run homer from J.D. Drew in the first, a two-run shot from Jed Lowrie in the fifth and a solo belt from Lowrie in the seventh. They also tacked on three more in the sixth, capped by two double-steals, including one of home by Ryan Kalish.
