Beckett to start Friday; Weiland on Thursday

Josh Beckett will make his first start since spraining his ankle on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Beckett sprained his right ankleSept. 5, but threw off a mound on Monday at Fenway Park and thought he might be able to pitch this weekend.

Beckett (12-5) is 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 18 career starts against Tampa Bay. This season he has thrown 17 scoreless innings against the Rays, tallying 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Kyle Weiland will start on Thursday.
