ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Predictably, the Red Sox clubhouse was a somber room as players dressed and packed for the flight back to Boston.

But none of the players surveyed believed the recent skid (five straight losses and seven in their last eight games) was an invitation to panic.

Several pointed to the fact that the Red Sox had endured a similar slump in the first two weeks of this season, when they went 2-10.

"I'm not too worried about our team," said Lester. "We've overcome a lot worse than what we're going through right now."

"We just have to play better," said Dustin Pedroia. "If we play good, we're going to win. That's basically it. We're a pretty damn good team; we just hit a pretty tough patch."

"We've got to get back to our 'A' game again," said David Ortiz. "Nobody's happy with the way things are going right now . . . To be honest with you, I think the intensity and the effort is right there. But everything is kind of going in a different direction at once.

"It seems like everybody's in a funk right now. There's nobody to blame but everybody."
