TORONTO -- Marco Scutaro and Dustin Pedroia make up the Red Sox' double play combination at shortstop and second. For now, the similarities end there, because at the plate, they're heading in different directions.

Scutaro enjoyed another big night Thursday with three hits and two RBI. In the four-game series against the Blue Jays, the series, Scutaro finished 11-for-17 (.647) with four doubles and nine RBI. Going back to the start of the last homestand, Scutaro is hitting .404 (19-for-47) with 17 RBI.

Pedroia, on the other hand, was 1-for-20 in the series here and has dipped down to .298 for the season. He made the final out of the game and, frustrated, smashed his bat in pieces down the dugout runway.

"He's probably trying a little too hard," said Terry Francona. "He feels so much responsibility when we're not clicking to do it by himself. That's one of the characteristics we love about it.

"We want him to get hits, but when he doesn't, we don't worry about him very much."

Said Pedroia: "I pretty much have had five bad games. That's pretty much it. I swung the bat like crap for five games; there will be a time when I swing the bat for five games where I won't get out. That's how it happens."
