TORONTO -- Terry Francona all but closed the door Monday on reliever Bobby Jenks pitching again this season.

"I would say the chance of Bobby pitching . . . we're probably past that point," said Francona.

About 10 days ago, Jenks was set to begin a rehab assignment for Single A Salem, but fell ill. Since then, his back, which has led to two DL stints, has acted up again and there are no plans for him to throw anytime soon.

He's set to see Dr. Kirk Wood, a Boston back specialist, Wednesday.

"The role that we envisioned for him" -- seventh-inning bridge to Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon -- "never came to fruition," said Francona. "We've tried to fill that role. But we haven't had him. It's not like we had two good months of him and we had to replace him."
