The Boston Celtics continue to promote from within with the latest addition to their coaching staff.

Jamie Young, who has been with the Celtics for the past eight seasons - the first seven as the team's video coordinator and last season as an Advance Scout - has been promoted to assistant coach for this upcoming season.

Danny Ainge, the Celtics' president of basketball operations, told reporters on Wednesday that Young will be "sort of a go-between with our game-planning coaches and our advance scouts."

Young's promotion comes shortly after Boston promoted Mike Longabardi to fill the vacancy left by Lawrence Frank who was recently hired as the head coach of the Detroit Pistons.

The Celtics also decided not to bring back assistant coach Roy Rogers, who is expected to wind up on the Pistons staff with Frank (the two worked together when Frank was the head coach of the New Jersey Nets).

Longabardi has been with the C's for the past four seasons. Prior to that, he spent two seasons with the Houston Rockets - one as a video coordinator and another as an assistant video coordinator.

While it's not a given that Longabardi will lead the defensive charge the way Frank did, his defensive background certainly played a role in the C's decision to promote him to the bench.

"Mike's been an assistant coach behind Lawrence, behind Tom Thibodeau (former C's assistant and current Chicago Bulls head coach) and Jeff Van Gundy for many years," Ainge said. "He's ready for a chance."

Ainge added, "Mike has sort of been an assistant defensive coordinator to this point. So it would be an actual progression for him. But that may be tweaked around with (Celtics assistants) Kevin Eastman and Armond Hill. They all know our defense. And Doc (Rivers) is the one that really runs our defense."
