Running Back Kevin Smith worked out with the Patriots on Tuesday, according to Aaron Wilson of Scout.com.

Smith, 24, has spent all three years of his NFL career with the Lions. Appearing in 35 games, he has rushed for 1,856 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has also made 91 receptions for 824 yards.

As a rookie during Detroit's winless 2008 season, Smith played in every game and rushed for 976 yards and eight touchdowns.

Smith missed the final three games of the 2009 season, as well as the first three games of 2010, with a knee injury. After playing in six games last year, he suffered a season-ending thumb injury. Detroit did not make a qualifying offer when he became a restricted free agent.

The Patriots' third round pick, running back Stevan Ridley, has been out of practice and missed Saturday's preseason game against Detroit.
