NEW YORK -- Dustin Pedroia will return to Boston Thursday morning to have his ailing right knee examined, though the likelihood that Pedroia needs arthroscopic surgery which would sideline him for a month is small, according to sources.
Pedroia first hurt the knee after diving for a ground ball in mid-May and it has hampered him at the plate. After going 1-for-3 in Wednesday's 11-6 win over the New York Yankees, Pedroia is hitting just .247.
The sore knee, coupled with his surgically-repaired left foot, have slowed Pedroia this season.
Pedroia's injury and his plans to return to Boston for an examination were first reported by the Boston Globe.
Pedroia told the Globe that if he undergoes surgery following the exam Thursday, he would be sidelined about a month, but multiple sources Wednesday night said the prospect of surgery was unlikely.
