BOSTON -- The playoffs haven't even begun, and the Bruins defensive depth is already being challenged.

Young defenseman Steve Kampfer will be sidelined for a couple of weeks because of a knee injury suffered last weekend while skating for the Providence Bruins. The 22-year-old blueliner has 5 goals and 5 assists and a plus-9 for the Bruins this season in 38 games, but was sent down to Providence last week with only a handful of games remaining in the regular season. Kampfer wasnt expected to be in the starting lineup when the postseason begins on Thursday.Steven injured his knee and hes going to be evaluated in the next couple of days. My guess is hell be gone for at least two weeks, said general manager Peter Chiarelli. Weve got depth beyond that in Matt Bartkowski and Andrew Bodnarchuk and Colby Cohen. Weve got some players that can fill in. Obviously its a blow to our depth, but from what Im told, its not that bad and he should be back. I dont know. I cant give you an exact time frame, but I know its at least two weeks.Kampfer was spotted on crutches last weekend after hurting himself against the Springfield Falcons, but the injurys nature wasnt known until Chiarelli revealed that it was a knee issue.Veteran defenseman Shane Hnidy will begin the postseason as Bostons seventh defenseman after he was signed during the month of February. He played a handful of games after sitting out the entire season with a shoulder injury.
