FOXBORO -- Stephen McCarthy's goal in the 22nd minute gave the New England Revolution another early lead in this early season, but Portland's Jack Jewsbury tied the game at 1-1 nearly 16 minutes later, and the Revs and Timbers played through to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.
The Timbers outshot the Revs 4-1 in the first half, but it was that one shot from McCarthy that helped the Revolution earn their fifth point of the season. They now have a 1-0-2 record through the first three games of the 2011 season.
McCarthy's shot came from the top of the box, and Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeseon nearly made the stop, as he dove to his left and got his hands on it. But McCarthy's low blast to the far side of the net was too hard for Gleeson to handle, and it ended up in the back of the net for the early 1-0 New England lead.
Jewsbury tied it up when he seemingly caught Revolution defenders flat-footed in their own box, by receiving a nice touch pass from Timbers midfielder Jeremy Hall and letting a low shot rip into the low-right corner of the net, past a diving Matt Reis.
